Heating and Cooling in Central Vermont
Washington County winters are long and cold. The Knapp State Airport weather station in Berlin records more than 8,000 heating degree days in a typical year. Piped natural gas isn't available in most of Washington County, so most homes here heat with heating oil or propane, and heating oil is still the most common home heating fuel statewide. A lot of the housing is old, too. More than half of Barre City's homes were built before 1940, and nearly half of Montpelier's before 1950. Many of them have hot-water boilers and no ductwork.
That's why the systems we install most are a good fit here:
- Cold-climate heat pumps and ductless mini-splits from Daikin, Fujitsu and Mitsubishi that heat well below zero and add air conditioning without ductwork. See heat pump installation and ductless mini-splits.
- Ducted heat pumps with furnace backup for homes that already have ducts. See ducted heat pumps & central air.
- Oil and propane furnace and boiler service (natural gas too, where you have it) for the backup systems that carry homes through the coldest nights. See furnaces and boilers.
The July 2023 floods damaged basements from Waterbury and Montpelier to Barre and Northfield. We can inspect flooded equipment and help you move more of your heating above the basement.

Frequently Asked Questions
What area does Premier Heating and AC serve?
We serve Washington County and nearby Orange County towns in Central Vermont, centered on Barre, Berlin and Montpelier. We serve Vermont only.
What fuels do you work with?
We install and service heat pumps, plus oil, propane and natural gas furnaces and hot-water boilers. In Central Vermont most homes use oil or propane, and pairing a heat pump with that system can cut how much fuel you burn.
Do you offer 24/7 emergency service in every town you serve?
Yes. Our 24/7 emergency line is open to everyone in our service area: Washington, Orange and Chittenden Counties in Vermont, no membership required. After hours, we typically call you back within 30 to 45 minutes and have a tech on site within 1 to 3 hours whenever we can. Weather, roads and distance affect timing, so we can't guarantee it.
Do you charge to travel to outlying towns?
No. Our pricing is the same everywhere in our service area: Washington, Orange and Chittenden Counties. There's no extra trip charge for farther towns. (After-hours emergency calls have a separate $250 emergency callout fee, the same in every town.)
