Ductless Mini-Split Installation in Barre, Montpelier & Central VT

Mini-splits are the most common way to bring efficient heating and cooling into a Vermont home, and they're the work we do most. A ductless mini-split pairs a quiet indoor unit with a compact outdoor unit, connected by a small refrigerant line. You don't need ductwork, you don't need to tear open walls, and each room or zone gets its own temperature control. Premier Heating and AC installs single- and multi-zone Daikin, Fujitsu and Mitsubishi mini-splits throughout Barre, Montpelier, Berlin and the rest of Central Vermont, and we're a Daikin Elite Contractor.

Is a Ductless Mini-Split Right for Your Home?

A mini-split is usually the best fit when:

  • Your home has no ductwork, which describes most older Vermont houses heated by a boiler and baseboard or radiators

  • You have a cold bedroom, a finished attic, a bonus room over the garage or an addition your main system never reaches

  • You want air conditioning without window units

  • You want to burn less oil or propane and lean on your existing system only as backup

  • You're finishing a basement, a workshop or an in-law apartment

Central Vermont has a lot of homes built before 1940, from former granite workers' houses in Barre to the older homes around Montpelier and Northfield. Mini-splits suit these houses well because they add heating and cooling without new duct runs through plaster walls.

Indoor Unit Options

Not every room suits the same unit. We'll help you choose:

  • Wall-mounted heads. The most common and most affordable choice. They mount high on the wall and work well in living rooms and bedrooms.

  • Floor-mounted units. These sit low on the wall where a radiator or baseboard might go, so they're easy to tuck away. They're good at pushing heat across the floor in winter. We've installed a 15,000 BTU floor-mounted unit for a homeowner who wanted it out of sight and wanted steady winter heat plus summer cooling.

  • Ceiling cassettes. These are recessed into the ceiling, so you see only a grille. They're popular in kitchens, open layouts and businesses.

  • Concealed slim-duct units. These sit above a ceiling or in a closet and feed short duct runs to one or two rooms.

Single-Zone vs. Multi-Zone

A single-zone system is one outdoor unit and one indoor unit. It's the simplest and most efficient way to heat and cool one large space or a problem room.

A multi-zone system connects one outdoor unit to several indoor units, each with its own remote and temperature. A three-zone setup, for example, can cool each bedroom on its own in summer. We'll compare the cost and performance of one multi-zone system against two or more single-zone systems for your layout.

Clean, Careful Installation

How the lines are run matters as much as the equipment. On every mini-split install we:

  • Size each zone for that room's heat loss, not just its square footage

  • Mount the outdoor unit on a stand or bracket above the snow and away from roof drip lines

  • Run refrigerant lines in color-matched line-hide, or through interior walls when you'd rather see nothing at all

  • Pressure-test, evacuate and charge the system to manufacturer specs

  • Route condensate drains so they won't freeze in January

  • Show you how to use the remote, the modes and the settings

Rebates and Financing

As an Efficiency Vermont contractor, we can tell you which Efficiency Vermont and utility rebates may apply to your mini-split and help with the paperwork. Rebate amounts change, so we confirm current numbers at your estimate. Financing is available through Wisetack, with 0% interest for the first 3 months (subject to credit approval). As an Efficiency Vermont participating contractor, we can also help you with Efficiency Vermont loan options.

Keep It Running Like New

A mini-split's indoor coil and blower wheel collect dust and can grow mold if they're never cleaned, which cuts efficiency and causes odors. We recommend a professional cleaning once a year. Our maintenance plans start at $19.99 a month and include annual system care and an extended labor warranty on new installs, as long as you buy the plan within one year of installation.

"Our mini-split worked like a charm keeping us cool during the last hot spell of summer, and now it is keeping us warm during the first cold snap of fall." Sven

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a ductless mini-split cost in Vermont?

It depends on the number of zones, the indoor unit types and how the lines need to be run. We give you a written quote after a free in-home visit, plus any rebates and financing that may apply. A single-zone install (one indoor and one outdoor unit) usually takes one day.

Can a mini-split heat my whole house?

Sometimes. In open layouts and well-insulated homes, one or two units can carry most of the heating. In homes with many closed-off rooms, a multi-zone or ducted system usually works better. Many customers keep their existing furnace or boiler as backup.

Will I see the refrigerant lines on the outside of my house?

Only if you want to. We can run lines in color-matched line-hide, or through the walls so they come out right behind the indoor unit.

How often should a mini-split be cleaned?

We recommend a professional cleaning and tune-up once a year. Rinse or vacuum the filters yourself every month or two during heavy use.

Do mini-splits work in a power outage?

No. Mini-splits run on electricity, so they stop when the power goes out. That's one reason many Central Vermont homeowners keep a backup heat source.

Do you install mini-splits in businesses?

Yes. We install wall units and ceiling cassettes in shops, restaurants and offices. One of our recent commercial jobs replaced a very old unit in a local sandwich shop.
