Furnace Repair

Furnaces usually warn you before they fail. Call us if you notice:

  • No heat, or the burner lights and then shuts off

  • Short cycling, where the furnace turns on and off every few minutes

  • Cold rooms, weak airflow or a blower that runs nonstop

  • Banging, squealing or rumbling noises

  • Soot, an oil smell or a sulfur smell near the furnace (if you smell gas, leave the house and call your fuel supplier or 911 first)

  • A furnace that keeps "locking out" and needs a reset

  • Heating bills that climb even though your habits haven't changed

Our techs troubleshoot ignition and burner problems, flame sensors, nozzles and filters on oil burners, igniters and gas valves, blower motors, limit switches, thermostats and controls. We tell you what's wrong, what it costs to fix, and whether the repair makes sense on an older furnace.

Furnace Tune-Ups

A yearly tune-up before heating season is the best way to avoid a mid-January breakdown and keep fuel costs down.

  • Oil furnaces: clean the combustion chamber and heat exchanger surfaces, replace the nozzle and oil filter, check the pump pressure, adjust the burner and run a combustion test.

  • Propane and natural gas furnaces: clean the burners and flame sensor, check the igniter, gas pressure, venting and safety controls.

  • Every furnace: check the blower, belts and motor, inspect the filter, test the thermostat and check for carbon monoxide.

Tune-ups are included in our maintenance plans, which start at $19.99 a month.

Furnace Replacement and Installation

If your furnace is old, unsafe or costing more in repairs than it's worth, we'll walk you through your options:

  • Like-for-like replacement with a new high-efficiency oil, propane or natural gas furnace. We mostly install Daikin and Bosch furnaces.

  • Fuel conversion, such as oil to propane, or oil to natural gas where Vermont Gas service is available

  • Furnace plus heat pump (dual-fuel). Add a ducted heat pump, such as a Daikin FIT outdoor unit with a Daikin or Bosch A-coil on your furnace, to the same ductwork so it handles most of the year, with the furnace as backup. See Ducted Heat Pumps & Central Air.

Every replacement starts with sizing. A furnace that's too big short-cycles and wastes fuel, and one that's too small can't keep up when it's -11°F outside. We look at your home's heat loss and ductwork before we recommend anything.

Oil, Propane or Natural Gas: We Work on All Three

Heating oil is still the most common home heating fuel in Vermont, and in Washington and Orange counties most furnaces burn oil or propane, because piped natural gas isn't available in most of the area. In Chittenden County, where Vermont Gas Systems serves much of the area, many homes heat with natural gas. Whatever your furnace burns, we repair it, tune it up and replace it, and we can help you decide whether to stay with the same fuel or add a heat pump. See Burlington and the Chittenden County service area.

Financing and Rebates

Financing is available through Wisetack, with 0% interest for the first 3 months (subject to credit approval). As an Efficiency Vermont participating contractor, we can also help you with Efficiency Vermont loan options. If you're adding a heat pump alongside your furnace, Efficiency Vermont and utility rebates may apply. As an Efficiency Vermont contractor, we can help you find out and handle the paperwork.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know whether to repair or replace my furnace?

Think about replacing it if the furnace is near the end of its life, needs a major repair like a cracked heat exchanger, or breaks down every winter. We'll give you the repair price and the replacement price side by side so you can decide.

How often should an oil furnace be serviced?

Once a year, ideally before heating season. Oil burners build up soot, and a yearly cleaning, nozzle change and filter change keeps them running efficiently and safely.

Do you work on propane and natural gas furnaces?

Yes. We repair, tune up and install propane and natural gas furnaces, along with oil furnaces. We service all major brands, and we mostly install Daikin and Bosch furnaces.

Can you convert my furnace from oil to propane or natural gas?

Yes. We do fuel conversions, such as oil to propane, or oil to natural gas where Vermont Gas service is available. We'll tell you whether converting your existing furnace or replacing it makes more sense.

Can I add a heat pump to my furnace?

In most homes with ductwork, yes. A ducted heat pump can share your furnace's ducts and handle most of the heating and all of the cooling, with the furnace as backup on the coldest nights.

Do you offer emergency furnace repair at night or on weekends?

Yes. We answer no-heat calls 24/7, and anyone can call. You don't need to be a member. Members get priority scheduling.
