Two Communities, One Service Area
Essex Junction was a village inside the Town of Essex from 1892 until July 1, 2022, when it became Vermont's newest city. The two share a history but have different housing:
City of Essex Junction. About 10,600 residents (2020 Census) live in 4.6 square miles around Five Corners, the five-way intersection at the center of the city. The city is home to the Champlain Valley Exposition, which has hosted the Champlain Valley Fair since 1922, as well as an Amtrak station and GlobalFoundries. Housing is a mix of older village homes, mid-century neighborhoods and new apartments along Pearl Street. Older homes without ducts are good candidates for mini-splits. Mid-century homes with ducts and a furnace can add a ducted heat pump.
Town of Essex. The town includes Essex Center and the Essex Experience area, plus subdivisions of single-family homes and condos and rural properties toward Westford and Jericho. Rural homes often heat with oil or propane. A cold-climate heat pump can take over much of the heating season, with the existing furnace or boiler kept as backup.
