Air Conditioning Installation & Repair in Central Vermont
Vermont summers aren't what they used to be. Hot, humid stretches now hit Barre, Montpelier and the valleys along the Winooski and Dog rivers every year, and window units can only do so much. Premier Heating and AC installs and repairs air conditioning for Central Vermont homes and businesses, from ductless mini-splits and ceiling cassettes to central air. Most of the systems we install are heat pumps, so the same equipment that cools you in July also heats you in January.

AC Installation Options
Ductless mini-split AC. This is the most popular choice in Central Vermont, where many homes don't have ductwork. A quiet indoor unit cools each room or zone, and it runs as an efficient cold-climate heater in winter. Learn more about ductless mini-split installation.
Central air with a ducted heat pump. If your home has ducts from a furnace, a ducted heat pump delivers central air through your existing vents and adds efficient heating too. Learn more about ducted heat pumps & central air.
Traditional central AC condenser. If you only want cooling and already have a furnace and ducts, we can install or replace a standard central AC system. Most of our customers choose a heat pump instead, since it cools just as well and heats too, but cooling-only is always an option.
Commercial cooling. We install wall units and ceiling cassettes in shops, restaurants and offices with as little disruption as possible. A local sandwich shop that was always too warm had its very old unit replaced with the newest comparable model, and now the shop stays crisp and cool.
Why Choose a Heat Pump Instead of a Cooling-Only AC?
A cooling-only air conditioner sits idle about nine months a year in Vermont. A heat pump does the same cooling job, and it also:
-
Heats your home efficiently through most of the winter
-
Cuts the oil or propane you burn
-
May qualify for Efficiency Vermont and utility rebates (we'll help you check)
-
Removes humidity in summer for a more comfortable house
That's why most of our "AC" customers end up with a Daikin, Fujitsu or Mitsubishi heat pump.
Air Conditioning Repair
Call us if your AC or heat pump:
-
Runs but blows warm or barely cool air
-
Won't turn on, or trips the breaker
-
Has ice on the indoor coil or the outdoor lines
-
Leaks water indoors, or the condensate pump keeps running
-
Makes grinding, rattling or hissing noises
-
Smells musty when it starts up, a sign the indoor coil or blower wheel needs cleaning
-
Shows a blinking error code on the indoor unit
We diagnose refrigerant leaks, failed capacitors and fan motors, frozen coils, clogged drains, sensors and control boards. Before we start a repair, we explain what's wrong and what it costs.
Get Ready Before the First Heat Wave
The best time to service your AC or heat pump is spring, before everyone else calls. A professional cleaning clears the indoor coil and blower, straightens and rinses the outdoor coil fins, checks electrical connections and confirms refrigerant performance. It's part of every maintenance plan, starting at $19.99 a month, and plan members get priority scheduling when the heat hits.
Financing
Financing is available through Wisetack, with 0% interest for the first 3 months (subject to credit approval). As an Efficiency Vermont participating contractor, we can also help you with Efficiency Vermont loan options.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the best air conditioner for an older Vermont home without ducts?
A ductless mini-split. It needs only a small hole through the wall for the refrigerant line, cools room by room, and heats efficiently in winter. It's the system we install most.
Can my air conditioner also heat my house?
If it's a heat pump, yes. Most systems we install, ductless and ducted, are heat pumps that both cool and heat. A cooling-only AC can't heat.
Why is my AC running but not cooling?
Common causes are a dirty filter or coil, a frozen indoor coil, low refrigerant from a leak, or a failed capacitor or fan motor outdoors. Turn the system off if you see ice, and call us.
How often should my AC or heat pump be serviced?
Once a year. If your heat pump runs year-round, a yearly deep cleaning keeps it efficient for both heating and cooling.
Do you install AC in businesses?
Yes. We install and replace ductless wall units and ceiling cassettes in commercial spaces such as shops, offices and restaurants.
